On\u00a0<strong>December 20, 2024<\/strong>, near\u00a0<strong>Rhodes Island<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Hellenic Coast Guard deliberately rammed a boat carrying 27 refugees<\/strong>, including\u00a0<strong>women and children<\/strong>, leaving\u00a0<strong>eight dead, three of whom were decapitated or lost part of their bodies due to the severity of the collision. In addition, a four-year-old girl is missing<\/strong>. This\u00a0<strong>was neither an accident nor an incident \u2013 it was a brutal crime.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is not an isolated case. For years, Greece and EU institutions have turned a blind eye to systematic pushbacks, brutal violence, illegal detentions, and deliberate failures to conduct life-saving search and rescue operations. From the\u00a0<strong>Pylos shipwreck<\/strong>\u00a0in June 2023, which left\u00a0<strong>over 600 dead<\/strong>, to numerous other preventable tragic and fatal incidents. drownings, European border policies, particularly on the Greek-Turkish border, have become a mechanism of death.\u00a0<strong>The\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.synigoros.gr\/en\/category\/default\/post\/deltio-typoy-or-porisma-toy-synhgoroy-toy-polith-gia-to-nayagio-ths-pyloy\"><strong>scathing report<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0by the Greek Ombudsman on the Pylos shipwreck,\u00a0<\/strong>highlighting clear evidence of serious criminal liability among senior Coast Guard officers\u2014further demonstrates the deep-rooted impunity within Greek authorities.Additionally, the\u00a0<strong>European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruling in\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hudoc.echr.coe.int\/?i=001-230249\"><strong>A.R.E vs Greece\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>(January 16, 2024) condemned Greece for violating the right to life when the Hellenic Coast Guard opened fire on a refugee boat near Pserimos Island in 2014, killing a passenger and injuring others. The court found that Greek authorities lacked clear regulations on lethal force in maritime operations, failed to conduct a proper investigation, and dismissed critical evidence, reinforcing a culture of impunity. \u00a0These systemic failures must be urgently addressed to prevent further tragedies.<\/p>\n<p>In a broken system that prioritizes deterrence over humanity,\u00a0<strong>traffickers emerge as the main perpetrators, exploiting desperation, endangering lives, and profiting from human suffering.<\/strong>\u00a0Yet rather than focusing accountability on these criminal networks,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Greek and European Union authorities<strong>\u00a0systematically target their victims:<\/strong>\u00a0refugees and asylum seekers fleeing war, persecution, and unimaginable tragedies.<\/p>\n<p>These people, already suffering unimaginable trauma, face further injustice as they are confronted with\u00a0<strong>punitive border policies and inhumane practices that exacerbate their vulnerability.<\/strong>\u00a0Too often, they pay\u00a0<strong>the highest price with their lives<\/strong>, while systemic failures allow violence and exploitation to thrive along Europe\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We refuse to stay silent while refugees are being murdered at Europe\u2019s borders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>The Rhodes Tragedy: A Crime Against Humanity<\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Two survivors, \u2018D\u2019\u2014searching for his missing four-year-old daughter\u2014and \u2018M,\u2019 who lost his wife to decapitation, describe the horror:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur boat left Bodrum, Turkey, at 7:20 a.m. on December 20. It was a sunny day. At around 9:30 or 10 a.m., when we were close to Rhodes, two Coast Guard boats appeared behind us. One approached rapidly from the left side of our boat and\u00a0<\/em><strong>rammed us without warning<\/strong><em>. Everything happened in seconds. The Coast Guard boat\u00a0<\/em><strong>literally climbed on top of us<\/strong><em>, crushing those sitting in the front. When I regained consciousness, I saw bodies floating. A woman had\u00a0<\/em><strong>no head<\/strong><em>. The other Coast Guard boat just watched us from a distance.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This testimony sheds light on the brutal circumstances of the tragedy. The survivors complain that the incident was not the result of an accident or mishap but of a deliberate crime.<\/p>\n<p>This crime\u00a0<strong>violates<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>International Maritime Law<\/strong>, which mandates search and rescue at sea.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The 1951 Refugee Convention<\/strong>, which guarantees the right to seek asylum.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights<\/strong>, specifically\u00a0<strong>the principle of non-refoulement<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Greek national law<\/strong>, which requires authorities to conduct life-saving operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instead of\u00a0<strong>protecting lives<\/strong>, the Greek and EU authorities\u00a0<strong>have repeatedly made decisions that cost lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>Our Demands: End Impunity, Ensure Justice<\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We\u00a0<strong>demand<\/strong>\u00a0urgent action from the\u00a0<strong>Greek and EU authorities<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Find the Missing Child:<\/strong>\u00a0Deploy all resources to\u00a0<strong>locate the four-year-old girl<\/strong>\u00a0and end the agony of her critically injured mother, who remains in intensive care, and her grieving father.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Launch an Independent Investigation:<\/strong>\u00a0Establish a\u00a0<strong>transparent, EU-led inquiry<\/strong>\u00a0into Coast Guard actions, including\u00a0<strong>reviewing onboard footage<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Prosecute those responsible.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Allow Survivors to Identify the Bodies:<\/strong>\u00a0Some survivors have not yet been granted access to the remains of their loved ones\u2014<strong>this cruelty must end.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Facilitate Repatriation of the Bodies:<\/strong>\u00a0Expedite the process of returning the victims\u2019 remains to their families, providing them with the dignity and closure they deserve.<\/li>\n<li><strong>End Systematic Pushbacks and Border Violence:<\/strong>\u00a0The Greek and EU authorities\u00a0<strong>must halt all illegal deterrence practices<\/strong>\u00a0that violate international law and result in\u00a0<strong>the preventable deaths of refugees.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A Holistic Approach to Combat Trafficking:\u00a0<\/strong>Authorities must take decisive action to<strong>\u00a0dismantle trafficking networks, prosecute traffickers,\u00a0<\/strong>and ensure that refugees are not punished or further victimized.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>A Call to Action: European Civil Society Must Not Stay Silent<\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We call on\u00a0<strong>civil society organizations, legal bodies, and European citizens<\/strong>\u00a0to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sign this statement<\/strong>\u00a0demanding accountability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pressure national governments and the European Commission<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>sanction Greece<\/strong>\u00a0for breaking international laws.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engage the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)<\/strong>\u00a0to hold Greek authorities accountable for\u00a0<strong>state-sanctioned killings.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mobilize protests, petitions, and advocacy campaigns<\/strong>\u00a0to expose these crimes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Support refugee-led organizations<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>focus on the survivors\u2019 voices in all advocacy efforts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>This is not just about Greece\u2014this is about Europe. If we remain silent, we are complicit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The European Union was built on<strong>\u00a0democracy, human rights, and dignity.
