The arson attack on Athens Voice undermines Greek democracy

Press Release

In response to the recent arson attack on the newspaper Athens Voice, but also every similar attempt to use violence as a means to confront opinions and ideas, the Hellenic League for Human Rights calls to mind that which should be self-evident: that freedom of expression includes not only ideas with which we agree or that are neutral, but also those which we are against, even those that offend, shock or disrupt society.

Supporting a newspaper that was attacked by people who disagree with its views is a political and social necessity. The arsonists who attacked Athens Voice are not simply enemies of the newspaper that they burnt. They are enemies of our right to coexist as a society where people are free to argue. The arsonists who attacked Athens Voice are enemies of democracy.
